Evaluate:
These sources are closely related to my topic. All these sources go in depth and explain the orgins of how the relationship between Tonga and Samoa actually began and how it was shaped over the the course of history. They stem from scholarly references, so we know that the information reported has a solid credential background. The book by Te'o Tuvale more specifically gives a thorough description of the origins of the legends of Samoa and how tonga plays a role in the samoan culture.

The Discovery of Samoans by Tongans:

Except from An Account of Samoan History:
[Leutele-le-iite was King of Atua at the time when the first canoe with the King of Tonga on board reached Samoa. The King of Tonga was searching for his brother who had fled from Tonga to escape the engeance [sic] of the King for having committed adultery with the King's wife and during this search he discovered Samoa. The King was so impressed with the Islands that on his return to Tonga still in search of his brother, he planned the war against Samoa.]

Legend has it that around 900 AD - 950, Tui Tonga (son of the sun god and tongan woman) became the first king of the islands of tonga. Under his rule, they captured and enslaved the samoan people for nearly 400 years. During this reign, Tui Tonga would have as he pleased whatever Samoan woman he pleased. By 1600 A.D, the Malietoa family mounted a counterattack against the Tongans in hopes of gaining their freedom. "The war to drive out the Tongans was then planned. Tuna and Fata were appointed to operate in the back country and Ulumasui and Tupuloa were put in charge of the Aana district. A dance was given on the malae by the Samoans for the Tongans. That day was called Matamatame. A song was sung whilst the dance was in progress - “Matamatame, Matamatame, let down your foot but catch hold of your war stick and let the blow against Tonga be a might one.” Clubs were thereupon raised and the Tongans pursued. All districts alike chased the Tongans. Tuna and Fata kept to the back country and Ulumasui and Tupuola to the Aana district. The Samoans met at Mulifanua and drove the Tongans into the sea where their fleet was anchored. At this juncture Talaaifei'i, the King of Tonga, made the following speech: Malietoa, Malietau - ""Ua Malie Toa, Malie Tau Ou te le toe sau i le auliuli tau, a o le auliuli folau O le a le toe sii mai se taua e Toga i Samoa;(well fought) let us give over this business of war and remember this - I will not again come to Samoa except to pay a friendly visit.” This agreement has been kept down to the present time. This incident was the commencement of the Malietoa" This is where the first king of Samoa sprung from, which became known as Malietoa or Tui Manua.

Although we see in history that the treaty of peace made between these two islands was simply trough the word of mouth, it has been honored through centuries. However somewhere down the line, and may I see, because of the lack of historical knowledge and simple ignorances, samoans and tongans began a war that ended and was sealed longgg before. So from history, I can say that the present war between these two countries is based on false and faulty ground. Resentment or disagreement from the past, lack of thorough knowledge of both histories is not a sound-enough reason for Tongans and Samaons especially in California to hate each other.

    1. Load of crap! The history of Samoa goes back way before this fabricated story. Tonga did not discover Samoa, and the Tuimanua empire of Samoa, and Tuipulotu empire of Fiji predates the Tongan empire of Tuitonga. Your own ancestors say that Samoa has a huge influence in Tonga. And, Tongans are a mix breed of Samoans and Fijians.

No this is true the only reason y u can't believe because u don't like the truth and the truth hurt aye cause u did't think a small island could enslave a big one well guest wat they did and plus Tonga has over 170 islands and only 36 are inhabited so if u add all that up its 700,000 miles of land so beat toko .

    8. Toa Samoa Tongans are apparently Samoans from Manu'a who had travelled south, which is why it is believed to be called "Tonga", meaning South in Samoan (or so I assume) I heard that centuries ago, a Samoan Warrior that went by the title Ama had a daughter that married the King of Tongas son when Ama was banished to Tonga for the loss of a battle. They then had a son named Ngata who was the first to take on the title Tui kanokupolu. (this is a shortened explanation) Tongans and Samoans shouldn't be fighting in the first place because we once had a very close relationship in the 16th Century until it was destroyed by the arrival of Europeans. This seemed like the most logical explanation, however it was only based of a few sources. We might never know the truth because over time it has been turned and abbreviated into different stories/events and has been told from the views of different people, so in the end, we need to know both sides of the stories and legends to get to this so called truth.

If u were bought up in Samoa then u will know this story but if not then u didn't really know our language and culture evidence of this there is still a whole village in Samoa where it's just Tongan the land was gifted by the malietoa our first king where people have left them to live there life peacefully and as part of peaceful treaty with the Tongan king part of the royal family still there and why do you think the Tongan king always attend our independent day for years. It is for that very reason.

    8. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with Sina and Pili, siblings. Sina was taken from Samoa as a wife for a Tongan king. During their journey back to Tonga, they were running out of food and was going to kill Sina when her brother, Pili appeared as a shape shifter and told Sina where to lead these men to finding food to eat along their journey. In the olden days, including other ancient peoples, it was common for a king or high chief to wed their daughters off to their rivals to bring peace or union.

I can even write a whole lot of bullshit stories about the Samoan and Tongan war but I don't want to because there's simply no evidence. The only evidence is in the modern world, Samoans dominate Tongans in sports especially fighting sports and they are more successful.

  7. I am from Tuiatua (Aleipata) and my family has the whole history of this war written by my grandfather Vaeaufano Fua (Lotopu'e Aleipata) from his forefathers.

I have noticed the word (Matamatane) its supposed to be (Seseetoamatamatane)and it has a meaning from the (laau ta sa faaaogaina e Tuna, Fata, Tapuloa and Taputoa) e fasi ai Toga. There are villages which were named during this war from Aleipata (ie) Lotopu'e, Malaela, Manunu, Sauafata, Solosolo all the way to Manono. This area is where the first Malietoa was named (Malietoa Tuvaelua) supposedly the son of Tuna n Fata's sister that was married to Tapuloa (warrior from Atua). the fight was between Tuna and Fata about the name being born from what the Tui Tonga said (as mentioned above).

this is the real history from our Family as Vaeaufano is originated from the time (Seseetoamatamatane) was established thus our existance!

this is history and people need to consult the family and the district where the authentic story is from.

  9. Oldest artifacts found in Samoa date back to approximately 1735 BC. Tongan ceremonial language is closely similar to Samoan more so than everyday Tongan language. DNA results suggest that Tongans migrated from a land northward. In Samoan the word for south is Toga and in Tongan the word for south is Tonga. Not so coincidental considering Tonga is South of Samoa. Face it. We Tongans came from Samoa. Case closed.

  10. I believe the Tu'i Manua was before the Tu'i Tonga. From comparing the history between the two I can see that Samoa seemed to play a very important part in Tonga's early history. I seriously believe that Tongans were Samoans who rebelled and sailed south to establish their own empire. The Tu'i Tonga dynasty mimics the Tu'i Manu'a dynasty. Places in Tonga and Islands have names taken from Samoa (their homeland) The Tongan capitol is a Samoan word lol. I am Tongan but the more I trace my bloodline it keeps leading me back to Samoan princesses. I know that the language spoken by Royalty is more Samoan than Tongan. Always remember that Tongans are very proud and stubborn people which is obvious just as an older sibling is patient with a younger sibling....it is the way that I see Samoans being patient with their Tongan brothers. Unity makes us stronger....pride divides us.

Ancient samoan empire predating European contact along with the tuipulotu aka tuifiti Fijian empire.Samoa was divided at the time of invasion into districts with its own chiefs ruling each district respectively.and fighting each other. You should look up tuimanua fitiaumua he was a warrior king who conquered Tonga and Fiji also the current Tongan king dynasty the tuikanukupolu descend from a chief that was exiled from safata Samoa when he lost a war

  12. That's similar to the story I heard ! Tui Tonga was the ruler of Samoa basically and allied with the Fijians ? ! Due to an incident , the people rose up led by malietoa and forced them to flee ! Tui came upon an island therefore naming it Tonga after his name sake ? And so the malietoa dynasty began ? I know we are 1 people , but the eloping with Fijians would explain why they are generally bigger and darker ? Any Fijian input ? Lol

  14. Bula to you all,
I'm from the Island of Cikobia in the province of Macuata in Vanualevu. It's the northernmost island of Fiji, but my mom is from Cakaudrove. A Fijian linguist, Paul Qereti, says that the first people who arrived in Wallis and Futuna is from cikobia. They called futuna that too cause of a plant named Futuna. In Samosan folk songs and mystical legends , Uvea is mentioned frequently. Most got to do with the conquest of Tui Manu'a, so in this case, Futuna would be an great trading port between Fijians and Samoans, as Samoan legends says that two sisters learnt tattoos from Fiji. Just as Vanuabalavu in Lau was the trading port between Tongans and Fijians, Wallis and Futuna is between Fijians and Samoans. In addition, most of the dialect and tapa designs from the province of Cakaudrove are quit similar to Samoans then Tongans. In the last 200 years, Fiji only had three chiefs who controlled various provinces. The Tongan Kingdom through Ma'afu had Lau and the Yasawa group, Rewa in Viti Levu, and Macuata in Vanualevu, while the high chief of Caukaudrove a.k.a Tui Cakau had Bua and Taveuni, and Cakobau a.k.a Tui Bau had half of Viti levu. But here is the connection of Bauan Kingship to Samoan Kingship, during the death of the Tui Fiti of Samoa (Fiti means in Fijian is Viti),no other Fijian Chief but Ratu George Cakobau was seen at his death ceremony, so just as its clear that Tui Cakau and Tui Lau has connection to the Tongan Monarch, the Tui Bau has connection to the Samoan monarch, too.

  20. Polynesians all came from the same place but just chose to settle in different places around the pacific. Tongans call Samoa "Ha'amoa", which loosely translate to chicken bloodline for lack of a better word...our ancestors probably said it to their friends and family who chose to call Samoa home as a joke before they embarked on the journey south to discover new islands. After finding the islands in the south they probably couldn't think of a name so they just called it Tonga (or toga in Samoan), which means south in both language. Time and the amount of ocean between us somehow altered our cultures and languages, but the similarities are still there. Point being is, if our ancestors can unite as one and be brave enough to conquer the biggest ocean on the planet, we can do the same and unite to make polynesia a happier and more peaceful place as I am sure our ancestors intended. Don't let the white man scholar tell you that our ancestors were savages and all that BS. Because they don't want to admit that our ancestors were the greatest and most intelligent explorers this planet has ever seen. Our ancestors didn't conquer the greatest ocean on earth by luck, they were smart asf. They would be kicking themselves to see what they worked so hard for and made sacrifices for go to waste because we've adopted the white man mentality of needing proof to validate something. We polynesians are better than that. Educate your heart before educating your mind. OUR ANCESTORS DID NOT CONQUER THE LARGEST OCEAN IN THE WORLD DIVIDED, THEY DID IT TOGETHER. Be one Polynesia. Make Polynesia the great peaceful place it was destined and intended to be by our ancestors.

Whether you like it or not, of all the groups in the south pacific, we are more identical in everything compared to other south pacific nations. Nobody knows for sure what happened in the past. We have some truths, but mostly speculations. Tongans and Samoans believe in Jesus Christ and God. We also believe that we will live with them again someday after this life. I promise you, you will have a chance to ask him all your questions, and he will gladly answer them, and you will have a better understanding of things. Until then, love one another. Someone mentioned in this thread that when the tsunamis hit the islands, Samoa reached out to help Tonga even during its own time of need. I'm sure there have been instances where Tonga has helped Samoa. Anyway you look at it, you cannot deny the love we have for each other. The hatred I see now days stem from gangs. I'm Samoan, but my best friends in college, whom I still am in contact with to this day, are Tongans. We played college ball together. We ate together, laughed together, made fun of each other and each other's culture together, partied together, struggled together, and we came out the best of friends. I know I could never have made it through some tough times back then without all the usos and tokos that were there with me and shared in my struggle. 33. Tongans are not from Samoa. We are a warring clan from Pulotu in Fiji Lau Group who was warring(Lapita migration) with the people in Tonga and so as Samoa.
The Tongan Tu'i Tonga the 1st Aho'eitu is mentioned in a Uvean legend/myth.
"Malo Lailai (Greeting In fagauvean) alright so there was a legend of a powerful warrior who was referred to as ahu'eto he was a power legendary warrior who conquered the people of Fanguvea. He was from what we called in our legend and myths "Polianga oe fukau ngĂ ahe tahi tui tonga' which translates to 'land and kingdom of adventures seas." After conquering the island it was said that he intermarried with a local ouvean women. After that he would bring many tongans to intermarry with the locals which brought the rise of fagauvea. The son of Aho'etu who was referred to as Mana'tukua who was known as the legendary chief of fagauvea he helped unify the whole of uvea island by the help of Mighty tongan warriors. This legend is mainly about "the rise of fagauvea" or "kou e Mahiki xere hake le fagauvea."
